Choosing between the Insta360 X3, X4, and X5? This guide breaks down the key differences to help you decide which camera is right for you.
When Did They Launch?
The X3 came out in September 2022. The X4 followed in April 2024. The latest X5 launched in April 2025.
How Much Do They Cost?
The Insta360 X5 is priced at £519.99 in the UK, $549.99 in the USA, and €589.99 in Europe.
The Insta360 X4 costs £425.99 in the UK, $424.99 in the USA, and €475.99 in Europe.
The Insta360 X3 is the most affordable at £309.99 in the UK, $299.99 in the USA, and €359.99 in Europe.
Physical Design
The X5 and X4 are similar in size and weight.
The main difference? The X5 moved the USB-C port to the bottom right instead of the top left.
The X5 also supports a new Quick Release mount alongside the standard 1/4"-20 thread.
Video Quality
Sensor Size Matters
The X5 has a larger 1/1.28" sensor. Both the X4 and X3 use a smaller 1/2" sensor.
A bigger sensor captures more light. This means better image quality, especially in tricky lighting.
What Can Each Camera Record?
The X5 shoots standard 360 video at up to 8K 30fps. It also offers HDR 360 at 5.7K 60fps and a special PureVideo night mode at 8K 30fps.
The X4 maxes out at 5.7K+ 30fps for standard video and 5.7K 30fps for HDR.
The X3 records at 5.7K 30fps for both standard and HDR modes.
Real-World Difference
On your phone, you won't notice much difference between them.
On a TV or monitor, the X5 and X4 look noticeably sharper than the X3.
The gap between X5 and X4 is smaller but still visible on large screens.
Low Light Performance
This is where the X5 really shines.
The X5 has a dedicated PureVideo mode for night recording. It combines better hardware with clever software to reduce noise and grain.
The result? The X5 produces cleaner night footage than both the X4 and X3.
It even rivals the discontinued ONE RS 1-INCH 360 EDITION, despite having a smaller sensor.
Battery Life
The X5 records for about 130 minutes at 8K 30fps. Plus, it charges to 80% in just 20 minutes.
The X4 gives you around 100 minutes of recording at 8K 30fps.
The X3 lasts about 70 minutes at 5.7K 30fps.
InstaFrame Mode (X5 Only)
The X5 has a clever new feature called InstaFrame.
It lets you reframe your 360 footage directly on the camera. No editing apps needed.
You can switch between front and back views while recording. The camera outputs a ready-to-share 1080p flat video.
The X4 and X3 don't have this feature at all.
Waterproofing
The X5 is waterproof to 15 metres. With a dive case, it goes to 60 metres.
The X4 and X3 are both waterproof to 10 metres. With dive cases, they both reach 60 metres.
Replaceable Lenses (X5 Only)
Scratched your lens? On the X5, you can replace it yourself.
The Insta360 X5 Lens Replacement Kit costs just £29.99 in the UK, $34.99 in the USA, or €35.99 in Europe.
The X5 lenses are also tougher. They're 100% more drop resistant than the X4 and better protected against scratches.
On the X4 and X3, damaged lenses mean sending your camera away for expensive repairs that take weeks.
Audio Quality
The X5 has a built-in wind guard made from multi-layer steel mesh. It's designed for action sports like cycling and motorcycling.
The X4 and X3 need stick-on wind muffs sold separately.
Should You Upgrade?
Consider upgrading to the X5 if you need:
For serious 360 creators who shoot daily, these features are worth the investment.
If you just bought an X4, it's still an excellent camera. The upgrade may not be worth it yet.

Final Thoughts
Insta360 released cameras in back-to-back years (X4 in 2024, X5 in 2025). This is faster than their usual 2-year cycle.
They may be preparing for increased competition in the 360 camera market.
For most people, the X5 offers the best combination of features, quality, and future-proofing.
